Archive

The archive holds almost ten thousand linear metres of paper documents, including 400,000 technical drawings, 5,000 volumes and journals on motoring and industrial history, over 6 million images (prints, colorslides, plates, and negatives), and 200 hours of historical footage.

The bequest of the designer Dante Giacosa, the “father” of the utility cars – the Topolino, the 600, the 500 – that have powered Italy is also of great interest.

Studies and Research

Centro Storico Fiat promotes studies and research in the technical, economic, humanistic and scientific disciplines and contributes to the experimentation of new tools for the promotion of its documentary heritage, public history activities and participatory archiving.

Through collaborations with cultural and academic institutions, temporary exhibitions and publications, the archive not only preserves the historical memory of the car manufacturer, but also promotes its dissemination and interpretation as far as the industrial evolution and mobility is concerned.

ARCHIVE PROTECTION AND ENHANCEMENT

The vast documentary heritage of Centro Storico Fiat will undergo in-depth cataloguing, inventory and digitisation work, with the aim of ensuring its full accessibility and usability for the public, enthusiasts and the scientific community.

Research projects will be launched in 2025 with national and international universities and institutes, aimed at enhancing an archive that, through the history of the Fiat brand, tells the twentieth century, the industrial history of Turin and Italy and how this has influenced the evolution of contemporary society.

Among the entities involved are the State Archives of Turin and the School of Palaeography, Archives and Diplomacy, with which training internships and dissertations will be launched, aimed at analysing sections of the archive that are still unpublished, and to open up new research paths.

In collaboration with Scuola Holden, the richness and heterogeneity of the Fiat archive will become a creative educational path for students who – starting from the reading of documents or inspired by graphic and photographic works – will turn the numerous stories kept in one of the most important archives for the industrial history of the twentieth century.
